Headwear and hairstyles in folk costume and bunad use is produced by Norsk Folkedraktforum (NFF) and consists of more than 70 different handmade headdresses, made by 22 groups from across the country. In addition to geographic affiliation and social status, the headdresses tell the story of many different craft traditions. Here you will find embroidery, woven bands, and stiffened headdresses. The project was part of the effort to have bunad use inscribed on UNESCO’s Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, and the inscription came on 5 December 2024. The aim of the exhibition is to highlight and inform about the place of headwear in costume tradition, and to inspire the active use of headwear in today’s bunad use.
Norsk Folkedraktforum is a nationwide organization that works with Norwegian bunads that are a continuation of folk costumes that had not fallen out of use before they began to be used as bunads, or bunads that are reconstructed folk costumes. The members of Norsk Folkedraktforum preserve traditional craftsmanship and pass on knowledge of material and intangible popular costume traditions.
