The monument

Kjell Aukrust with Solan and Ludvig
There were enthusiasts from Alvdal Sports Club that raised the monument, as a thank you and a tribute to Kjell who had made the ski village more known than the skiers themselves had managed. Here stands Kjell gazing out over his childhood realm, together with Solan and Ludvig, of course. The monument is made of bronze and granite and was created by Nils Aas. Kjell himself demanded the sculptor from Inderøy, "I must ask for the biggest fruit on the tree – Nils Aas must do it."
The monument was unveiled on August 5, 1989, and Henki Kolstad recited Erik Bye's poem at the unveiling.
I wish I was in Alvdal tonight,
to see how Nils has carved out Kjell’s remarkable head.
He must have surely carved a tear?
He must have surely forged a smile?
And eyes that glimmer
and gaze wide over
the beloved miles of home
